  Route non-forced incremental terminal validation through the component-caching worktree Delegate on Windows. Keep forced preflight removal late and Windows-only.

  Unix continues to rely on O_NOFOLLOW and only inspects paths after collisions, avoiding added successful-path I/O.

  GHSA-pmm9-4h7q-24c8 reports that non-exclusive checkout could open an existing terminal symlink while materializing a regular file on Windows. The checkout path relied on Unix-only no-follow open flags and did not enforce the same invariant on Windows.

  Inspect terminal entries with symlink_metadata immediately before each write or create operation. Normal checkout now reports a collision, while forced checkout removes the link itself after replacement content is ready.

  Git baseline at a23bace963d5 uses lstat-based terminal checks in entry.c before unlinking and exclusively creating checkout output. Related hardening includes b6986d8a758, fab78a0c3de, and 6fa50cc4a19.

• <csr-id-4bc6596f7f4259d4796d8b37df4ca3ca6d9eeacc/> continue checkout with unavailable encodings Repositories can declare working-tree encodings unsupported by encoding_rs, such as UTF-32. Checkout previously rejected these declarations before writing any content, causing non-bare clones to fail.

  Add regression coverage for an unknown encoding with CRLF conversion. Checkout now warns and preserves the output of earlier conversions when the requested encoding is unavailable, while other filter users remain strict by default.

  This matches Git convert.c encode_to_worktree() and entry.c checkout_entry_ca(): since 107642fe2661236f48b912480e090799e339c512 (Git 2.18), failed checkout re-encoding is non-fatal and the current blob content is written.

  Validated with focused gix-filter conversion tests, gix-worktree-state checkout tests, cargo fmt, and cargo check for gix and gix-worktree-state.

  Nonexclusive checkout reused regular files and only represented a pending executable-mode update as a boolean for adding +x. A tracked non-executable file therefore retained executable bits from the existing worktree file.

  Add a regression that inverts the modes of existing executable and non-executable files for both overwrite_existing settings. Replace the one-way boolean with an internal set/remove/unchanged action, and adjust mode bits when needed through the already-open file descriptor before recording stat data Special bits are cleared whenever executable bits are adjusted.

  Git baseline: entry.c creates checkout files using the cache-entry mode, and git checkout --force does not retain obsolete executable permissions.

  Delayed process-filter results recorded a false needs-executable-bit value and later passed it as the filesystem capability.   Carry the actual filesystem executable-bit capability through delayed processing and let the normal open/finalize path derive the required mode action from the index entry. Extend the delayed-filter fixture and cover both exclusive +x application and nonexclusive +x removal.

  Git baseline: entry.c creates delayed checkout output using the cache entry mode when finish_delayed_checkout() retries checkout_entry().

This release includes an overhaul of the url parsing implementation, allowing more urls to be parsed correctly and refining the error messages for invalid ones. Improvements include the added support for ssh aliases (github:byron/gitoxide has previously been parsed as local path), adjustments around the interpretation of colons in file names (previously we disallowed colons that were not followed up with a slash character) and some smaller changes that bring the interpretation of file urls more in line with Git's implementation.

There are still many (edge) cases in Git's url parsing implementation which are not handled correctly by Gitoxide. If you notice any such deviation please open a new issue to help us making Gitoxide even more correct.

  • scripted_fixture_read_only_with_git_version()
  • scripted_fixture_read_only_with_args_with_git_version()

  Both use normal fixture generation when the installed Git version satisfies

• <csr-id-51724d15a4ae5a41b4a97412b2a847366c61f98d/> Get and set mode using std, still on open file descriptor This replaces explicit fstat and fchmod calls (via rustix) with File::metadata and File::set_permissions, respectively. The change here is confined to gix-worktree-state and, more specifically, to the operation of checking the mode of an open file and setting a new mode based on it with some executable bits added.

  In practice, currently, on Unix-like systems:

  • File::metadata either:

• calls fstat, or
• calls statx in a way that causes it to operate similarly to fstat (this is used on Linux, in versions with statx).

• No longer require gix-worktree-state to depend directly on rustix. (This is minor because it still depends transitively on it through gix-fs, though some uses of rustix::fs in gix-fs might likewise be possible to replace in the future.)
• Use the standard library's slightly higher level interface where modes are treated as u32 even on operating systems where they are different (e.g. u16 on macOS). This removes operations that do not correspond to what the code is conceptually doing. It also lets the function that computes the new mode from the old mode no longer depend on a type that differs across Unix-like targets.

• <csr-id-be0abafe883a09491762b496950089927264af8c/> Don't attempt +x if it was replaced by a non-regular file This does not make a difference in typical cases, and anytime it matters something has probably gone unexpectedly, but this narrows the window of time during which a race condition could occur where a regular file has been replaced with something else at the same path (e.g. a directory) by some other process.

  An example of why it's valuable to avoid this is that if the entry is a directory then executable permissions have a different meaning and adding them could increase access unintentionally. Likewise, when we set executable permissions we remove setuid, setgid, and sticky bits, which also have different meanings for directories; in particular, on a directory the sticky bit restricts deletion.

  (This also automatically avoids some problems in the case of finalize_entry being called with a path to set executable that was never a regular file in the first place. That should not happen, though, and allowing that is not a goal of this change.)

• <csr-id-879d29deb6776e9dd9de2df4fc10bfccfb1292e7/> Don't set extra permissions with +x on existing file This fixes a bug that occurred when a regular file tracked as executable was checked out in a non-exclusive checkout on a Unix-like system (where the destination is a filesystem that supports Unix-style executable permissions). This occurs when destination_is_initially_empty: true is not explicitly set.

  Whether the file existed before or not, it is created without attempting to set its permissions to include executable bits, then the executable bits are added afterwards. On Unix-like systems, the file was given unrestricted 0777 permissions and was thus world writable. This happened regardless of the process umask or any other contextual factors.

  Although 0o777 is given as the mode both when permissions are set on creation (using OpenOptionsExt::mode and OpenOptions::open, which delegates to open), and when they are set after creation (using PermissionsExt::set_mode and std::fs::set_permissions, which delegates to chmod), the cases do not treat their mode arguments equivalently.

  • The first situation worked correctly because open automatically respects the current process umask. (The system takes care of this, as it is part of the semantics of creating a new file and specifying desired permissions.) So 777 was really expressing the idea of maximal permissions of those considered safe under the current configuration, including executable permissions.

1. Unset the setuid, setgid, and sticky bits, in the rare case that any of them are set. Keeping them could be unsafe or have unexpected effects when set for a file that may conceptually hold different data or serve a different purpose (since this is a checkout).

   For the setuid and setgid bits, it would be unsafe to keep them when adding new executable permissions. The intent of setuid and setgit bits is ambiguous in this situation, since they may have been meant only to apply to an earlier version of the file, especially since users may expect the file to be deleted and a new file of the same name to be created, rather than to confer extra abilities when executable bits are added in the future. Unsetting them makes adding executable bits where read bits are already present (which we will do) a reasonably safe operation.

   In the case of the setgid bit, another reason to remove it is that, on some systems, the setgid bit in the absence of any executable bits has the different meaning of enabling mandatory file locking. If the setgid bit was set for this purpose, then the effect of setting the EGID and potentialy elevating the privileges of the user who runs it is surely not intended.

2. Check which read bits (for owner, group, and other) are already set on the file. We do this only by looking at the mode. For example, ACLs do not participate.

3. Set executable bits corresponding to the preexisting read bits. That is, for each of the owner, group, and others, if it can read (according to the file mode), set it to be able to execute as well.

   In some cases, this may have a different effect from what would happen if the file were created anew with the desired permissions specified by a broad mode (e.g. 777) and subject to the umask. This is because it is possible to have a umask that limits read and execute permissions differently. Also, the file may have had its permissions modified in some other way since creation.

A first usable version of gix to make using gitoxide from your applications so much easier. It serves as a one-stop shop for application developers without sacrificing performance by default while making common use-cases more convenient.

Feature list

• gix as hub crate for application development with focus on usability without sacrificing any knob to tune performance.
• opt-in async for gix-packetline, gix-transport and gix-protocol for fully async git clients, along with the light-async feature toggle to build a gix pack-receive with an async client instead of a blocking one.
• Statistics for gix pack-create with the -s/--statistics flag to have data indicating the cost of the operation. Currently it's doing a lot of work that has to be avoided in order to be useable in production and the numbers underline that. Future iterations will cause key metrics to go down.
• Packs are now reproducible by default, which means that the same tip will always generate a pack with the same hash. This may be a desirable property for some kinds of packs, but not for others which is why it can be turned off for a considerable speed boost.

Performance

• On M1, thanks to a new release, Sha1 is now computed much faster which unlocks a massive performance boost. In my test, verifying/decoding the entire linux kernel pack now happens in 17s, as compared to 37s for canonical git.
• gix-object parsing is a few percent faster thanks a reworked error handling for objects. By default, error collection is disabled entirely making the error case zero-sized. If needed, verbose and stacked errors can be turned on using a feature toggle for applications who expect repositories with malformed objects and need detailed diagnostics.

Maintenance release without any new features.

These are created to account for breaking changes within the dependency graph of gitoxide crates. Due to some blunders in the past the version on crates.io could not be installed anymore. This was eventually fixed with new minor releases across the ecosystem.
